Siemens to supply wind turbines for onshore projects in Brazil

The wind turbines have a rating of 2.3 megawatts (MW) and a rotor diameter of 101 meters. Purchaser is the utility Tractebel Energia, headquartered in Florianópolis. After commissioning in late 2012, the combined capacity of the five projects will be 145 MW. Four of the windmill power plants are located in the state of Ceará and one in Piauí in northeastern Brazil.

“This is the third order in the last six months Siemens has received for wind turbines generator from Brazil,” said Jens-Peter Saul, CEO of the Siemens Wind Power Business Unit. “This demonstrates the confidence our customers have in our technology and in our commitment to a successful internationalization strategy.” In Latin America, Brazil is considered to be a key wind market. Experts estimate that up to five gigawatts of wind power will be installed by 2015.

Internationalization is a key pillar of Siemens’ strategy in the wind generator manufacturers business. In addition to opening two new factories in the U.S. and China at the end of 2010, the company has also announced plans for new factories or the extension of supply chain management in Canada, the United Kingdom, India, Russia and Brazil.

Wind-turbines Placement Produces

The power output of wind farms can be increased by an order of magnitude—at least tenfold—simply by optimizing the placement of turbines on a given plot of land, say researchers at the California Institute of Technology ( Caltech ) who have been conducting a unique field study at an experimental two-acre wind farm in northern Los Angeles County.

A paper describing the findings—the results of field tests conducted by John Dabiri, Caltech professor of aeronautics and bioengineering, and colleagues during the summer of 2010—appears in the July issue of the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy.

Dabiri’s experimental farm, known as the Field Laboratory for Optimized Wind Energy ( FLOWE ), houses 24 10-meter-tall, 1.2-meter-wide vertical-axis wind turbines ( VAWTs )—turbines that have vertical rotors and look like eggbeaters sticking out of the ground. Half a dozen turbines were used in the 2010 field tests.

Despite improvements in the design of wind turbines that have increased their efficiency, wind farms are rather inefficient, Dabiri notes. Modern farms generally employ horizontal-axis wind turbines ( HAWTs )—the standard propeller-like monoliths that you might see slowly turning, all in the same direction, in the hills of Tehachapi Pass, north of Los Angeles.

In such farms, the individual wind  turbines generator have to be spaced far apart—not just far enough that their giant blades don’t touch. With this type of design, the wake generated by one turbine can interfere aerodynamically with neighboring turbines, with the result that “much of the wind energy that enters a wind farm is never tapped,” says Dabiri. He compares modern farms to “sloppy eaters,” wasting not just real estate ( and thus lowering the power output of a given plot of land ) but much of the energy resources they have available to them.

Designers compensate for the energy loss by making bigger blades and taller towers, to suck up more of the available wind and at heights where gusts are more powerful. “But this brings other challenges,” Dabiri says, such as higher costs, more complex engineering problems, a larger environmental impact. Bigger, taller turbines, after all, mean more noise, more danger to birds and bats, and—for those who don’t find the spinning spires visually appealing—an even larger eyesore.

The solution, says Dabiri, is to focus instead on the design of the wind farm itself, to maximize its energy-collecting efficiency at heights closer to the ground. While winds blow far less energetically at, say, 30 feet off the ground than at 100 feet, “the global windmill  power available 30 feet off the ground is greater than the world’s electricity usage, several times over,” he says. That means that enough energy can be obtained with smaller, cheaper, less environmentally intrusive turbines—as long as they’re the right turbines, arranged in the right way.

VAWTs are ideal, Dabiri says, because they can be positioned very close to one another. This lets them capture nearly all of the energy of the blowing wind and even wind energy above the farm. Having every turbine turn in the opposite direction of its neighbors, the researchers found, also home wind generator increases their efficiency, perhaps because the opposing spins decrease the drag on each turbine, allowing it to spin faster ( Dabiri got the idea for using this type of constructive interference from his studies of schooling fish ).

The wind turbine syndrome also includes sleep problems

The wind turbine syndrome also includes sleep problems, irritability, and depression. The variable audible noise results in frequent awakenings or arousals, which may not be remembered. The disruption of sleep prevents the proper laying down and storage of memory. It is also associated with an increased incidence of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Arousals during slow wave sleep may trigger parasomnias (sleepwalking, night terrors), reports Dr. Christopher Nanning, an expert in sleep disorders.

Persons especially vulnerable to wind turbine generator syndrome include elderly, young children, children with developmental disabilities (especially autism spectrum disorders), and migraine sufferers.

There is also a vibroacoustic disease, which has been studied mostly in aviation workers. Different parts of the body, especially the chest and skull, have differing resonance frequencies’, writes Dr. Nina Pierpont. Air pressure (sound) waves of certain wavelengths resonate within these closed spaces, setting up vibrations to which the body responds by reinforcing soft tissue with extra collagen, which could cause thickening of the pericardium and cardiac valves, fibrosis of the lungs, and proliferation of glial cells in the brain.

Because of its long wavelength, infrasound is attenuated much less than audible sound, and diffraction by obstacles such as trees and bushes is much reduced. Thus it propagates over much longer distances. It can travel over hills, and is reflected by temperature inversion zones. This explains why the vertical wind turbines explosion of Mount St. Helens was felt all over the world, and how elephants can communicate with each other over tens of kilometers thanks to the temperature inversion zone that forms between sunset and sunrise.

Still another problem is shadow flicker, or a strobe effect. Some people lose their balance or experience symptoms of seasickness. Like other flashing lights, the strobe effect can trigger seizures in persons with epilepsy.

Some people are so severely affected that they abandon their homes. In Germany, real estate agents report a 20% to 30% loss of value for property within sight of wind generators manufacturers farms. In some places in the U.S., wind turbines may render nearby property unsalable. A study of the proposed Cape Wind project in Massachusetts concluded that the total property value loss of about $1 .35 billion would exceed the $800 million cost of construction.

Sinovel is the world’s second biggest manufacturer of wind turbines

Mr O’Connor, the company’s chief executive, confirmed yesterday that the company is planning to build wind farms in Ireland with a total capacity of 1,000 mega watts (MW), the equivalent of between two and three average-sized power plants, over the next five years.

He estimated this would involve a total investment of about €1.5 billion over the period. Mainstream has agreed a deal with Sinovel, China’s biggest manufacturer of small wind turbines, to supply the hardware needed.

According to Mr O’Connor, the China Development Bank is likely to provide part of the funding, along with his company, which he said now has considerable cash resources, although he did not give any details.

Mainstream and its partners will target projects that already have planning permission and licensing, but which have stalled for want of finance or some other reason.

The company is not ruling out getting involved in new developments in the future.

Mr O’Connor founded Mainstream in 2008 for vertical wind turbines with the €50 million that he made from the sale of independent energy company Airtricity to Scottish Southern Energy for €1 billion in early 2007.

The company has been active in Britain, western Europe and the US, but not in Ireland. Mr O’Connor said the company believes that the time is right to begin investing in Ireland, partly because the Government is committed to supporting renewable energy.

He said the British government recently said it would be willing to import wind-generated electricity from Ireland, which he said would help underpin demand here.

Mainstream has projects with a capacity of about 16,000MW under development around the world.

Mr O’Connor said that Chinese manufacturers such as Sinovel are looking to sell their products in countries in which the company is developing energy projects.

Sinovel is the world’s second biggest manufacturer of wind turbines after Spanish group Vestas.

Mr O’Connor founded Airtricity after leaving State company Bord na Móna, where he was chief executive. While he was there, he developed the country’s first commercial wind farm at Bellacorrig in Co Mayo.

Mainstream has operations in Britain, Europe and North and South America. The company frequently operates with partners such as Sinovel.

The country’s leading wind turbine makers are vying

The country’s leading wind turbine makers are vying with each other to push forward big-capacity wind turbines in a bid to win a slice of China’s offshore wind power development.

At the Offshore Wind China 2011, Asia’s largest annual offshore wind industrial gathering held from June 15 to 17 in Shanghai, Guodian United Power, China’s fourth largest wind turbine maker, announced it would roll out a six-mw prototype for offshore wind farms by the end of the year and would develop 12-mw turbines next year.

Shanghai Electric, the seventh largest turbine generator maker, said it would produce a five-mw offshore turbine late this year or early next year.

Goldwind, China’s second largest turbine maker, said it would produce a six-mw prototype late this year or early next year, and produce six-mw turbines in bulk in 2014.

The wind power branch of China Shipping Industry Corporation, based in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing, the 11th largest turbine maker, also edged into the tangled competition, saying it would produce a five-mw prototype in October.

Prior to this, last October, Sinovel, China’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, took the lead to produce the country’s first doubly-fed five-mw wind turbine. This turbine will be installed in a pilot offshore wind farm in Shanghai in August.

In May, Sinovel produced China’s first six-mw small wind turbine, and it has now set its sights on developing ten-mw turbines.

Last October, a few days after Sinovel, Xiangtan Electric Machinery(XEMC), based in central Hunan province, produced China’s first five-mw direct-drive permanent magnetic offshore wind turbine. By the end of June, XEMC will install a prototype wind farm in the Netherlands and in China’s southeastern Fujian Province, respectively.

The great mass fervor of leading Chinese wind generators makers in producing large-capacity offshore wind turbines shows, as industry officials have put it, that China has stepped into the transition period toward developing offshore wind power with five-mw and six-mw turbines.

To date, China’s land-based wind farms largely use 1.5-mw turbines.

The largest private wind power companies to the city population “power”

China Guodian Chief Economist Zhang Shumin in the “2011 China Forum on clean electricity,” said, according to national planning, in 2015 China’s total installed wind power  generators capacity reached 90 million kilowatts over the next period of time, wind power will maintain an annual growth rate of 15 million million or so, offshore wind power is the future direction of development.

Zhang Shumin said, “five-second” period, the country will increase efforts to promote Hebei, Fujian and other provinces, the development of offshore wind power, wind power industry, which will bring new growth.

Specific to China Guodian, Zhang Shumin said that in the development of offshore wind power construction in the intertidal zone, has solved the transportation of large equipment and displacement of a series of technical problems. Meanwhile, the GD group is currently developing grid-friendly 6-megawatt offshore small  wind turbine.

“‘Second five’ period, China Guodian will increase the level of equipment manufacturing, speed up large offshore wind power development, and promote the upgrading of the wind turbine, wind power development to ensure the scale and efficiency improvement to keep pace in China Guodian future wind turbines manufacturer development will be concentrated in the northeast, north, northwest, coastal intertidal and offshore wind energy resource development, “Zhang Shumin said.

“According to the plan, China Guodian wind power installed capacity in 2015 will exceed 25 million kilowatts, 40 million kilowatts by 2020.”

China Continues To Lead World In Wind Power Generator

China maintained its position as the country with the largest installed vrtical wind turbines capacity worldwide, with installed wind power capacity of 44.73GW in 2010, reports Shanghai Securities News, citing a report jointly released by Greenpeace International and the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association on June 16.

The current domestic on-grid wind power generators price is 0.51-0.61 yuan per kilowatt hour, 30 percent higher than conventional power.

The cost of wind power equipment installation fell 12.5 percent year-on-year to 3,000 yuan per kilowatt in 2010.

The big five power generation groups have a 56 percent market share in the domestic wind power industry.

China Guodian Group increased its installed wind power capacity by 3.49GW in 2010 to 8.94GW, maintaining its leading position in the domestic market.

China Huaneng Group reported total installed wind power capacity of 63.31GW, exceeding that of China Datang Group.

Shanghai Electric Group (601727, 2727.HK) and China wind turbines Creative Wind Energy entered the ranks of the top 10 wind power equipment suppliers in 2010, while Shanghai Tongyong Fans and Suzlon Energy dropped out of the list.

According to the report, the intense competition in the windmill  power industry may lead to integration in the sector.

The National Energy Administration published the 12th Five-Year Plan for the renewable energy sector, aiming to achieve total domestic installed wind power capacity of 100GW in 2015, including 5GW of offshore wind power capacity.

Shares of Shanghai Electric Group rose 1.19 percent to close at 6.8 yuan today.
