American Superconductor February 10, 2009 announcement with the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) and the United States National Energy Bureau of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) signed a joint collaborative R & D 10-megawatt wind turbine deal (CRADA). </ P>

This is a 12-month project, American Superconductor Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of 10 MW class superconducting fans will cost analysis, analysis of the project, including direct-drive type superconducting generator and all other components, such as blades, wheel hub, electric control system, cabin, tower tube and control equipment. Then National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) will draw a fan base pairs of the economic impact evaluation. Cover the initial cost and the cost of electricity.

Under the agreement, co-verification of the 10 MW class superconducting fans economy. American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) is independently developed 10 MW-class fan core component and system design. R & D collaboration agreements (CRADA) to allow the federal government and industry partners, optimize their resources, sharing expertise to protect the environment, and accelerate technology commercialization.

“The United States National Energy Board and its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have realized that in the next generation of wind power will account for a certain percentage of institutions,” the U.S. Director of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Dan Arvizu said, “the use of high-temperature superconducting technology can guarantee to reduce the overall cost of wind power. We are very pleased and American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) to jointly promote the development of this technology.”

Through the use of high-temperature wind power generators superconducting (HTS) wire in the generator rotor instead of copper wire, direct-drive type wind power generator system and traditional generators and gear boxes in comparison, the volume will be smaller, the weight will be lighter, while the efficiency of improved reliability, enhanced. American Superconductor expects that if the use of traditional techniques produced 10 MW class direct drive generator, its weight will reach 300 tonnes, while the use of superconducting technology, manufactured in 10-megawatt generator weight system only 120 tonnes. In addition, the small wind turbines direct-drive generators do not wind generators need to configure the cost of expensive gear box. This will help further speed up the sea, or land-based wind farm development.

Fan for 10 MW class superconducting generator is based on superconducting American Superconductor (AMSC) for the U.S. Navy has successfully developed a superconducting ship propulsion motors and generators, technical developers. American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) has recently released its design and production for the U.S. Navy’s 36.5-megawatt superconducting ship propulsion motor successfully passed the Navy’s full operation, and can be formally put into operation the news.
