			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Walking across the former site of the Dave Johnston Mine here, about half an  hour outside Casper, you&#8217;d never know that over the course of 42 years, 104  million tons of coal was taken out of the ground.</p>
<p>But now, instead of having a heavy carbon footprint&#8211;and coal certainly  does&#8211;these rolling hills have a green footprint. Today, the site is home to a  158-turbine wind farm that produces 237 megawatts of power, enough electricity  for 66,800 households for a year.</p>
<p>And what&#8217;s particularly notable about the site is that while the wind farm is  among the newest and most state-of-the-art in the country today, it is also  likely the first full-scale wind power project to be installed on the site of a  former coal mine.</p>
<p>From 1958 until 2000, the Dave Johnston Mine stretched for 9 miles through  this otherwise barren landscape. But in the late 1990s, after the mine&#8217;s  operator, Rocky Mountain Power, determined that it was no longer economical to  run it, a full-scale reclamation project began.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It would be hard to beat the sad gullibility with which the media last week reported the plans of Lord Mandelson and our Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband to cover our countryside and sea with 10,000 more huge <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com">wind turbines</a>. According to one newspaper, it would need &#8220;an area of only 70 square miles to generate Britain&#8217;s total power requirements&#8221;.</p>
<p>Well, no, actually. To meet our peak demand of 56 gigawatts of electricity would require 112,000 turbines covering 11,000 square miles, or an eighth of Britain&#8217;s entire land area.</p>
<p>Another newspaper solemnly reported that a new study shows that &#8220;a well-placed turbine could make enough energy to power 825,000 homes&#8221;. Well, no, actually. The figure for a single 2 megawatt turbine would be just 825 homes, meaning that the newspaper was only 100,000 per cent wrong.</p>
<p>Even more alarming than the media&#8217;s credulity is that of the ministers themselves, in seriously trying to pretend that their £100 billion dream of building three giant turbines every day between now and 2020 has the faintest practical hope of being realised, let alone that it would serve any useful purpose to do so.</p>
<p>Most alarming of all, however, in the desperation to reach EU &#8220;renewables&#8221; target, is the setting up of a new Infrastructure Planning Commission to force through thousands of these absurd objects over the wishes of local people and councils, who are now to be robbed of any right of appeal. Last week a Government inspector threw out a highly unpopular scheme for seven turbines in Shropshire which would have generated £43 million in subsidies alone for its owners over the next 25 years. The surrounding community was delighted. From next March, however, thanks to Lord Mandelson&#8217;s all-powerful new Commission, such inquiries <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com"> wind generators </a>will be a thing of the past, thrown onto the scrapheap of history along with much of the rest of our democracy, We will no longer have any right to oppose this tsunami of lunacy, until our countryside is ruined to no rational purpose whatever.<br />

<p><!-- E SF -->Save Our Silton campaigners waved banners and placards reading &#8220;No giant wind turbines here&#8221; and &#8220;SOS&#8221;.</p>
<p>The firm had said the project was crucial.</p>
<p>But the campaigners said they had already sent nearly 2,000 letters of objection.</p>
<p>A North Dorset District Council spokesman told BBC News it had been &#8221; a very popular decision&#8221;.</p>
<p>Earlier, Christopher Langham, chairman of Save Our Silton, said: &#8220;We are in favour of renewable energy and don&#8217;t object to wind farms in the right place.</p>
<p>&#8220;The character of this beautiful landscape will be changed and the views from the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will be spoilt.</p>
<p>&#8220;Most importantly, the nearest houses are less than 550m away from the <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com">wind  turbines.</a>&#8221;</p>
<p>But a spokeswoman for Ecotricity said properly designed and sited modern windmills did not cause problems for neighbours.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The result of the Next Generation contest 2009 is out. A French team of an engineer along with two architects has won this year’s prestigious prize for “Wind-it” design. They are the first non-US winners of the prize. The team suggests to place <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com">wind turbines</a> inside existing high-voltage electricity pylons. Names of the members of the winning team are Julien Choppin and Nicola Delon. They are partners in the Paris architecture firm Encore Heureux. The third member Raphael Menard is the director of Elioth that is a conceptual and experimental research wing of the large French engineering firm Iosis Group. They were judged to have best met the 2009 Next Generation Prize Challenge: “FIX OUR ENERGY ADDICTION.”  Wind farms are often considered an eyesore and they require large area for installation. People often complain that they spoil the skyline of the area. Wind-it project offers to answer many challenges we face while setting up wind farms in an area. One of the greatest challenges to the expansion of wind power: where to site <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com/Wind_Turbine.htm">wind turbines</a>. Choppin, Delon and Menard’s design uses the existing infrastructure. They suggest the use of already existing towers and pylons that dot the more than 157,000 miles of high voltage power lines in the U.S. They ask us to install the <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com/Wind_Turbine.htm">wind turbines</a> within already sited structures. Alexandros Washburn, who is the New York’s chief urban designer and a judge for the Next Generation competition, shares his opinion, “The genius of the proposal is that it solved probably the biggest issue of wind production, which is where to locate these very large structures. By incorporating them into transmission towers, which are already located and of the same scale as wind towers, the idea of how it looks on the landscape is very cleverly integrated.”  Another problem that wind farms face is how to transmit the power generated by wind? Wind-it proposal is so simple and practical that we often wonder that why this project has already been not implemented. Wind-it solves the problem of linking energy generation and electricity transmission in the same way–by co-locating them.  By using this new idea, we can pump wind energy right into the grid. We don’t have to create an extensive infrastructure and save the money. Statistics suggest if a third of France’s towers were installed with turbines, they could crank out as much as two nuclear reactors — about 5% of the country’s power needs. This figure might not sound impressive but it will generate a steady stream of clean energy by investing less amount of money.  A marriage of towers and turbines isn’t unheard of. Urban Green Energy, a wind-power start-up in New York, presently installed turbines atop the French telecom company Alcatel-Lucent’s cellular-communication spires. The turbines are nearly indistinguishable to those explained in Wind-it. The key difference is that the Alcatel-Lucent system utilizes its power on-site; Wind-it suggests tapping it into the grid.  There are some practical problems in implementing Wind-it project as such. The American power grid is clogged, archaic, and small. It is possible that the areas where Wind-it could be most effective would be unable to transmit electricity to the cities where it’s most needed. It’s an obstacle for any wind-power entrepreneur in the country. For a fresh enterprise that leans almost entirely on existing infrastructure, it could be the coup de grâce. “The most efficient way to go about this,” says Nick Blitterswyk, cofounder of Urban Green Energy, “would be to build new towers.” Many of the experts had suggested that route. Wind-it XL was designed as a two-in-one package. It minds several, if not all, the issues above and would be best suited to regions where the nuts and bolts of modern civilization remain unassembled.<br />

And Dr Majid Rashidi of Cleveland State University has a plan for them: Use them to generate wind power. Well, maybe not those towers specifically, but towers no more obtrusive than them. Here&#8217;s how:</p>

<p>Dr Rashidi has designed a system to mount four <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com">wind turbines </a>onto a silo-like structure that could be placed on city roofs. The original helical design (pictured at left) attempts to solve the perennial problem facing wind turbines placed on buildings in urban environments: Wind speeds that are too variable and turbulent to make these turbines truly effective.</p>
<p>His design, been refined into a silo shape, accelerates the wind hitting the turbine enabling them to generate power more consistently than other building-mounted designs.</p>

Dr Rashidi&#8217;s design can be expected to produce 8 kilowatts per hour according to a recent article in Reuters, a fraction of a fraction of that of large turbines.</p>
<p>Currently the Cleveland Indian&#8217;s are planning on installing one of the Rashidi <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com/Wind_Turbine.htm">wind turbines </a>at their stadium.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sales of turbines big enough to serve a single home or office building grew rapidly last year and are poised for even faster growth this year, according to a report from the American Wind Energy Association.</p>
<p>The report, published on Thursday (click for PDF), found that sales of <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com/Small_Wind_Turbines.htm">small wind turbines </a>smaller than 100 kilowatts grew 78 percent last year, even though there was a sharp drop-off at the end of last year and beginning of this year.</p>
<p>The actual number of small turbines installed, though, is very small at over 10,000 units last year, comprising 17.3 megawatts of added capacity.</p>
<p>The stimulus act passed earlier this year gives people who buy a small wind turbine a 30 percent tax credit on the installation, which addresses the challenge of the upfront costs, which can be several thousand dollars to install.</p>
<p>Apart from policies, the other important factor to making a small wind turbine economical is siting. A study done that analyzed small wind installations in Massachusetts and one looking at roof-mounted turbines in the U.K.found that the machines underperformed manufacturers&#8217; claims.</p>
<p>The best location for <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com/Small_Wind_Turbines.htm">small wind turbines</a>, most of which are mounted on poles, is an area with an average wind speed of about 12 miles per hour, said Ron Stimmel, the small wind advocate at AWEA.</p>
<p>&#8220;It all depends on your wind resource to get a decent payback,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You <a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com/hummer/post/is-wind-right-for-me.htm">About Small Wind Turbine?Is Wind Right for Me</a> need a little bit of land so you&#8217;re not talking cities, but mostly suburban and rural locations.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;If you find the wind annoying or have trouble keeping things on your porch, then you probably have enough,&#8221; Stimmel said.</p>
<p>Unlike large turbines, you don&#8217;t need to put up a tower to get data on wind speed but customers should look at wind maps and rely on installers to assess the resource, he added.</p>
<p>The dominant<a href="http://www.allwindenergy.com/hummer/catalog.asp?tags=Small+Wind+Turbine"> small wind turbine</a> design is essentially a smaller version of the three-blade horizontal axis large turbines used in wind farms. But there are now hundreds of different small turbines, some of which are designed for homes or structures such as streetlamps.<br />

The whole wind turbine system consists of generator body (including rotor blades), yaw shaft (including dogvane, anemometer, yaw shaft control box, DC generator for regulating direction), tower, inverter control system, energy storage system (accumulator for off-grid system, grid for on-grid system).<br />
